Craig Breslow Named Boston Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer

Former Pitcher Joins Team in Leadership Role

Boston, MA

The Boston Red Sox announced on Wednesday that they have hired former pitcher Craig Breslow as their new chief baseball officer. Breslow, a six-year major league veteran, will oversee all aspects of the team's baseball operations, including player personnel, scouting, and coaching. He will report directly to Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

Breslow, 38, pitched for the Oakland Athletics, Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians, and Arizona Diamondbacks during his playing career. He finished with a career record of 28-40 with a 4.14 ERA and 472 strikeouts. Breslow retired from playing in 2015 and has since worked as a special assistant to the general manager for the Chicago Cubs and as a baseball analyst for ESPN.

Breslow's hiring is the latest in a series of moves by the Red Sox to revamp their front office. In November, the team hired Chaim Bloom from the Tampa Bay Rays to be their new chief baseball officer. Bloom, a former agent, was instrumental in the Rays' success during his time in Tampa Bay. He is known for his innovative approach to player evaluation and development.

The Red Sox are hoping that Breslow and Bloom can help the team return to contention after a disappointing 2020 season. The team finished with a record of 24-36, their worst record since 1965. The Red Sox have not won a World Series since 2018.
